Starting November 2nd, morning news on Montana Public Radio will run until 9:00 a.m. The extra hour of news won’t be just a repeat of NPR’s Morning Edition. There will be more Montana news and the addition of Marketplace Morning Report.

There will be more time dedicated to Montana news between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. The Montana Morning News will now feature reports from Emilie Ritter in Helena, Katrin Frye in the Flathead or Kevin Maki in the Bitterroot, as well as Missoula anchor Edward O’Brien. Station Manager William Marcus notes, “In the past two years, we have planned for and created a significant, regional news team. We want to make sure everyone hears their great work.” News Director, Sally Mauk adds, “We’ve gotten good response to the expanded regional reports during our evening newscast, and now we’ll be bringing the same depth of reporting to the Montana Morning News.”

Two years of research and gathering feedback from our audience indicated that now is the time to make a shift in our long-standing morning news schedule. “It’s always been a bit of a controversy amongst our listeners wanting more news or more music in the morning,” says Program Director, Michael Marsolek. He adds, “By retooling the morning program block we have strengthened our news service, and have expanded our commitment to classical music.”

Classical has always been the core of Montana Public Radio’s music programming. The station’s commitment to classical music continues, with three to six hours of classical programming each day. Some program times have changed, most notably, Morning Classics, which will now air from 9 to 11 a.m. Highlighting other MTPR classical changes, local producer Marguerite Munsche’s Sunday Musicale will move to 7 a.m. and her Saturday Music Hall will gain a half-hour, now running until 5:00 p.m. The national show Performance Today returns to Tuesday nights, and will now be heard every weekday.

A news and information block will happen at midday, following the popular Freeforms show. The BBC World Service will lead off at 12:30 p.m. followed from 1 to 2 o’clock by a variety of public affairs and information programs. “This new midday block will have a good mix of global, national and Montana perspectives,” says program Director Michael Marsolek. He adds, “I’m excited to be able to add NPR’s Talk of the Nation - Science Friday to the schedule, and to move public affairs shows like Homeground, Living on Earth and Musician’s Spotlight, to our midday schedule.”
