Tune to Live Broadcasts from The National Folk Festival, July 10-12 - June 30, 2009
Montana Public Radio will be broadcasting live from the National Folk Festival’s Original Stage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 10th, 11th and 12th. In addition to the live music, we’ll have interviews with the performers, reports from around the festival and information about the musical traditions represented at this amazing, world music event.
MTPR is collaborating with Yellowstone Public Radio so listeners can tune in statewide. Our stage and broadcast hosts include: Montana Public Radio’s Michael Marsolek and Linda Talbott, and Ken Siebert from Yellowstone Public Radio. We’re very happy to have Nick Spitzer, folklorist and host of the national radio show American Routes, coming up from New Orleans to join our team.

Here’s a little bit about some of the headlining artists at this year’s festival, along with the times they’ll be on our broadcast stage:
Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano will perform world class traditional Mexican music to the stage on Friday 8:30-9:15pm. Beausoleil avec Michael Doucet, called one of the best Cajun groups in the world, will be broadcast on Friday from 9:30-10:30pm. On Saturday from 3:00-4:00pm, Thomas Mapfumo & the Blacks Unlimited will perform the revolutionary “chimurenga” (“struggle”) music, a mixture of rock and Zimbabwean traditional music. Sierra Hull and Highway 111 will finish out our broadcast day on Saturday with her highly acclaimed modern bluegrass music from 4:15-5:00pm. And finally, Magic Slim and the Teardrops will bring classic, house-rocking Chicago blues on Sunday from 4:00-5:00pm.
