Pledge Week 2008 Results - April 14, 2008
By Sunday April 13th at midnight, Montana Public Radio listeners had pledged over $455,000 to keep the station running for another year. This largest ever amount raised during a pledge week was accomplished in just seven days. The week was filled with hope, excitement, fun, and some concern over the effect of a sunny final weekend. The sunshine, however, did not dampen the pledge activity on the weekend, which brought in another record total of just over $200,000.
“Our listeners have provided a solid foundation for our next year of service,” says Associate Director Linda Talbott. With a goal for the week of $481,000, the $455,000 pledged does leave a $25,000 shortfall. “Additional pledges do come in after the on-air week and later we’ll determine how to make up the difference,” Talbott added.
The final seven hours of pledge week were devoted to the station’s signature finale, Pet Wars, which also reached a new milestone with pledges of almost $72,000. Dogs won again this year with 1,411 votes. Cats started with an early lead, but ended up in second place with 1,266 votes. Other critters in the menagerie included: 349 chickens; 322 cows; 132 horses; 49 fish; 39 rabbits; 37 pigs; 24 goats and cockatoos; and 17 bears and parakeets. At the low end of the voting were: 7 shrimps; 4 donkeys and ducks; 3 each of frogs, coyotes, earthworms and lovebirds; 1 each of ticks, monkeys, mice, owls, hedgehogs, lynx, bison, hermit crabs, and sheep.

| Northwest Area Foundation Grant Funds News Reports on Poverty Issues |
Through 2008 the Montana Public Radio News Department will be presenting regular feature stories about issues of poverty in Montana. This project is made possible with a two-year, $78,500 grant from the Northwest Area Foundation. The funding will enable Montana Public Radio to add a half-time reporter to its staff for the duration of the project, as well as cover costs for field recording equipment and travel throughout western and central Montana. News Director Sally Mauk says, “I’m excited about the project and the opportunity to get our news staff out to many Montana communities to report on such an important and timely topic.”
The Northwest Area Foundation approached Montana Public Radio with this opportunity for funding coverage of poverty issues, after beginning successful projects with Minnesota Public Radio and Seattle’s KUOW. The Northwest Area Foundation’s mission is to help communities in an eight-state region (including Montana) reduce poverty. www.nwaf.org.
