What: StoryCorps Mobile Recording Booth
City: Butte, Montana
Location: Across from the Motherlode Theater
Dates: July 5-28, 2007

National Public Radio’s StoryCorps is bringing it’s mobile recording booth to Butte July 5-28, 2007. The visit is sponsored by Montana Public Radio which broadcasts at 91.3fm in Butte, 91.7fm in Helena and 89.1fm in Missoula.

StoryCorps is a national oral history project aimed at instructing and inspiring people to record one another’s stories in sound. Participants interview grandparents, relatives and others whose story they want to hear and preserve. Pairs of people record their stories at the MobileBooth, with one person interviewing the other. At the end of the recording session, participants leave with a copy of their interview on CD and have the option of archiving the interview at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C.

About 130 recording slots will be available at the Mobile Booth in Butte this summer. StoryCorps’ first trip to the West in 2005 included a three-week stop in Missoula.

Montana StoryCorps excerpts will air through Septemebr on Montays at 3:00pm, Wednesdays at 7:15pm and Saturdays at 10:35am. National StoryCorps excerpts air year on NPR, and are heard on Montana Public Radio Fridays at 6:25 a.m. and 7:15 p.m. StoryCorps, the largest and most exciting oral history project in our nation’s history, won a Peabody Award in 2006.

Northwest Area Foundation Grant Funds News Reports on Poverty Issues
Through 2008 the Montana Public Radio News Department will be presenting regular feature stories about issues of poverty in Montana. This project is made possible with a two-year, $78,500 grant from the Northwest Area Foundation. The funding will enable Montana Public Radio to add a half-time reporter to its staff for the duration of the project, as well as cover costs for field recording equipment and travel throughout western and central Montana. News Director Sally Mauk says, “I’m excited about the project and the opportunity to get our news staff out to many Montana communities to report on such an important and timely topic.”

The Northwest Area Foundation approached Montana Public Radio with this opportunity for funding coverage of poverty issues, after beginning successful projects with Minnesota Public Radio and Seattle’s KUOW. The Northwest Area Foundation’s mission is to help communities in an eight-state region (including Montana) reduce poverty. www.nwaf.org.
