From the Top for March 07, 2013 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM [Program Website]
Today's Highlight: From Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this week's program includes one of the only teenage euphonium players From the Top has featured performing a gentle, lyrical piece by Simon Mantia ... We'll also meet a 14-year-old pianist who, in addition to being a phenomenal classical musician, creates wonderfully entertaining arrangements of American popular songs for the Pittsburgh Pops ... and a young ensemble from Philadelphia performs from Schubert's famous "Death and the Maiden" quartet
From the Top is an exciting and entertaining radio series that showcases the stories and musical performances of America's exceptional pre-collegiate classical musicians. The program is described by Symphony magazine as "not strictly a talk show, not strictly a musical performance show, but rather a blend of the two with a nod to the easy-going charm of 'A Prairie Home Companion.'"
Hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, each one-hour program features performances by soloists or ensembles, ages 9-18, combined with lively interviews, unique pre-produced features and lighthearted musical games. Announcer Joanne Robinson and roving teenage reporter Hayley Goldbach are also featured in each week's show.
Responding to O'Riley's engaging and often whimsical manner, the young artists share their passion for and knowledge of the genre, and reveal much about their non-musical lives, from career goals and siblings to favorite breakfast foods and pets. Special guest artists often join the young musicians on stage, including Isaac Stern, Mark O'Connor, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Eileen Ivers, and Judy Collins.
