From the Top for December 06, 2012 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM [Program Website]
Today's Highlight: From Troy New York, this week's From the Top features master cellist, Matt Haimovitz as our special guest artist. Maestro Haimovitz performs one of the most gorgeous pieces of chamber music written for the cello--David Popper's Requiem--with two wonderful teenage cellists and host Christopher O'Riley. We test his wits against some of the young performers on the show in a humorous cello trivia competition, and the program culminates with some of the genre bending Maestro Haimovitz has become famous for--a rousing finale arranged for 5 cellos
From the Top is an exciting and entertaining radio series that showcases the stories and musical performances of America's exceptional pre-collegiate classical musicians. The program is described by Symphony magazine as "not strictly a talk show, not strictly a musical performance show, but rather a blend of the two with a nod to the easy-going charm of 'A Prairie Home Companion.'"
Hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, each one-hour program features performances by soloists or ensembles, ages 9-18, combined with lively interviews, unique pre-produced features and lighthearted musical games. Announcer Joanne Robinson and roving teenage reporter Hayley Goldbach are also featured in each week's show.
Responding to O'Riley's engaging and often whimsical manner, the young artists share their passion for and knowledge of the genre, and reveal much about their non-musical lives, from career goals and siblings to favorite breakfast foods and pets. Special guest artists often join the young musicians on stage, including Isaac Stern, Mark O'Connor, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Eileen Ivers, and Judy Collins.
