From the Top for November 08, 2012 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM [Program Website]
Today's Highlight: This program is the first of two special From the Top episodes recorded with the Great Wall International Music Academy in Beijing, China. We meet the brilliant 17-year-old Chinese violinist Mei Di Yang who performs the music of Brahms. A chamber orchestra made up of students from around the globe performs beautiful traditional Chinese music, and for our grand finale, the youngest of the young: a 9-year-old and a 10-year-old share the stage in a performance of Bach's Concerto for Two Violins by J.S. Bach
From the Top is an exciting and entertaining radio series that showcases the stories and musical performances of America's exceptional pre-collegiate classical musicians. The program is described by Symphony magazine as "not strictly a talk show, not strictly a musical performance show, but rather a blend of the two with a nod to the easy-going charm of 'A Prairie Home Companion.'"
Hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, each one-hour program features performances by soloists or ensembles, ages 9-18, combined with lively interviews, unique pre-produced features and lighthearted musical games. Announcer Joanne Robinson and roving teenage reporter Hayley Goldbach are also featured in each week's show.
Responding to O'Riley's engaging and often whimsical manner, the young artists share their passion for and knowledge of the genre, and reveal much about their non-musical lives, from career goals and siblings to favorite breakfast foods and pets. Special guest artists often join the young musicians on stage, including Isaac Stern, Mark O'Connor, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Eileen Ivers, and Judy Collins.
