Today's Highlight: Today's University and Community calendar is partly sponsored by Writing Coaches of Missoula, a community-based organization providing individual writing assistance to Missoula area middle and high school students. The Writing Coaches are currently seeking volunteers and will be offering training sessions that begin on September 19th. The newly formed Beekeepers of the Bitterroot will meet on Saturday, September 8th from 8:30 -10:30 am at 209 North 10th Street in Hamilton. The meeting’s agenda includes a discussion on fall beehive management such as preparing hives for winter, medications, and combining hives. A free workshop on solar hot water systems for your home will be presented on Saturday, September 8th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Silver Bow County Extension Conference Room, 205 West Mercury in Butte. Come learn about system options that work well in Montana, current financial incentives, what to ask your installer, and more. Please preregister for this workshop by calling Susan at 994-2225.

Turning the Wheel Missoula invites folks of all ages and abilities to ROMP, a community class that uses group movement games to encourage spontaneous self-expression. The class will take place on Saturday, September 8th from 11:30 – 12:30 at the Downtown Dance Collective, 121 West Main Street in Missoula. For more information, please call 830-3285.

Auditions for string players interested in playing in the Missoula Symphony Orchestra take place this Monday, September 10th between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. at the Music Recital Hall on the University of Montana campus. The Blue Mountain Observatory near Missoula will host an open house this Friday, September 7th and the following Friday, September 14th. These public observing nights are free to everyone and observing begins about one hour after sunset. The Open Houses will be cancelled if the sky is cloudy or if thunderstorms threaten. It is very important that you call 243-5179 for weather and cancellation updates before you drive up to the observatory! The Flathead Audubon Society invites the public to the 6th Annual Raptor Day in Memory of Rod Ash. The celebration of northwest bird species and the conservation legacy of Rod Ash will take place from 9:30 – 3:00 p.m. this Saturday, September 8th at the Lone Pine State Park in Kalispell. The North Valley Public Library in Stevensville invites everyone to join them in celebrating the 5th annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration that will begin with a Spanish Fiesta on Friday, September 7th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Hispanic art materials, Spanish guitar music, as well as light refreshments are featured for the evening.
