University & Community Activities for July 09, 2012

Today's Highlight: Today’s University and Community Activities are partly sponsored by the Sander’s County Arts Council. Holding their 9th annual Montana Baroque Music Festival, “Bach and the Beasts”, featuring violinist, Monica Huggett, flutist Matthias Maute and six renowned baroque musicians, July 17th through the 19th at Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort in Paradise at 7pm. The Montana Awareness, Education and Equine Rehab Association in Belgrade is opening their facility to help anyone in need of a place to board their horses for the remainder of the summer due to the threat of burning forest fires. The facility can house over 300 horses, will provide hay, sawdust, etc for free, and have transportation options for people who are far away. Community members are asked to call the facility if any horses who have been set loose are found so that owners may be reunited with their horses. North Valley Family Canter Summer Programs will begin Tuesday, July 10th. Programs are for children ages 8 to 12, and will be held Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 3-5pm at the North Valley Family Center in Florence. Registration is required. The Veterans’ Advisory Council will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, July 10th from 4 to 5:15pm at the Lewis and Clark Library in Helena. Vets, adult family members and mental health professionals are invited to attend. For more information go to www.vacmt.org.

Are you curious about Montana’s birds? Join the University of Montana’s Avian Science Center for any of their morning bird bandings. Observe birds “in the hand”, learn why biologists band birds, gain bird ID skills and more! This week’s bird-bandings will take place Tuesday, July 10th and Wednesday, July 11th. Plan to arrive at either 7am or 9am for the two-hour program. For more information, including locations, directions, and a full schedule of this summer’s bird bandings call 243-2035.

The Rattlesnake Creek Watershed Group invites the community to attend the “Explore Your Own Backyard Creek” event. Explore Missoula’s Rattlesnake Creek, learn about native fish and wildlife, join in efforts to protect clean water, enjoy free snack and refreshments and more. This event will be held tonight from 6-7pm. Participants should meet at the end of Duncan Drive, next to the walking trail at 6pm.
