Today's Highlight: Today's University and Community Activities are sponsored by the 2010 Humanities Montana Festival of the Book, October 28th through the 30th in Downtown Missoula. The festival features regional writers in a variety of workshops, readings, panels, exhibits and more. For more details go to humanitiesmontana.org

Free depression screenings will take place tomorrow from 11 am – 2 pm and from 5 – 7 pm at the following locations in Missoula: Partnership Health Center, the Providence Center, the Missoula Indian Center, and Planned Parenthood. The screening is available to anyone from the age of 6 – adults, takes only a few minutes and is performed by a mental health professional with appropriate referral information provided. Dr. Mehrdad Kia, the Associate Provost for International Programs at The University of Montana will give a presentation on the “5 Stans,” a unique cluster of little-known countries in Asia. Dr. Kia’s presentation will be given at 6:00 pm tomorrow night, Thursday, October 7th at the Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell. For more information, call 756-3945.

Everyone is invited to a free clothes give-away that will be held tomorrow afternoon from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 South 6th Street West in Missoula. Over 1,000 clean, quality, gently worn apparel will be yours for the taking. If it fits, if you like it, if you need it….it’s yours. Refreshments will also be served. To benefit the Ninemile Wildlife Workgroup, the 3rd annual cake-tasting and live auction will take place from 6:00 – 9:00 pm on Thursday at the Historic Ninemile Ranger Station, 20325 Remount Road in Huson. Stop by and taste homemade baked goods and preserves, and then bid on your favorite treat. Call 542-2462 if you’d like more information.

In November, Montanans will vote on whether to convene a constitutional convention to revise or replace the state constitution. In light of this vote, the Montana Law Review will dedicate this year’s Honorable James R. Browning Symposium at The University of Montana in Missoula to an examination of the Montana Constitution and the process of a constitutional convention. The symposium is open to the public and will take place on Thursday and Friday, October 7-8 in the University Center. Registration is not required. For complete details, call 243-2023.
The Center for Ethics at The University of Montana in Missoula will host a lecture given by Dr. Thomas Pogge, Professor of Philosophy and International affairs at Yale University. The presentation, titled, “Environmental Protection and Poverty Eradication: Competing Imperatives?” will be given this Friday night at 7:00 o’clock in the Dell Brown Room in Turner Hall.
