Lyric Opera of Chicago for June 12, 2010 11:00 AM - 2:00 AM [Program Website]
Today's Highlight: The Elixir of Love by Gaetano Donizetti Nicole Cabell sings Adina in The Elixir of Love.
Donizetti's most enchanting comedy contains ravishing arias (such as the tenor's celebrated "Una furtiva lagrima"), as well as delightful duets, ensembles, and choruses. Atypical of operas from the Romantic era, the hero is a simple country lad, Nemorino (tenor Giuseppe Filianoti, debut), who pines for a wealthy landowner, Adina (soprano Nicole Cabell). The fun begins when Nemorino buys a phony "elixir of love" from the quack, Dr. Dulcamara (baritone Alessandro Corbelli), hoping that it will help himwin Adina's heart away from his nemesis, Sergeant Belcore (baritone Gabriele Viviani, debut)
Conducted by Bruno Campanella and sung in Italian.
The Matthew Bucksbaum Family Lyric Opera Broadcasts returns with opening night productions, following the end of the Metropolitan Opera season.
Since its early days, Lyric Opera of Chicago has been regarded as one of the top three US opera companies, along with the Met and San Francisco. Radio stations throughout America welcome the return of the Lyric Opera season rebroadcasts in the spring.
