Today's Highlight: The Lewis and Clark Library Foundation will host a Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau on the topic of Mark Twain and the banning of Huckleberry Finn. They’ll talk about the life and times of Mark Twain and his experiences in Montana, including the time he met and had breakfast with notorious Virginia City desperado Bad Jack Slade. It all happens next Sunday and Monday at the Lewis and Clark Library in Helena, 120 S Last Chance Gulch. To hear more, their phone number is 457-2335.

If you’re interested in attending a meeting about the upcoming land use plan for the Lolo planning area, the joint meeting of the board of county commissioners and the Lolo community council are meeting tonight. The agenda will include the discussion of the Missoula County Growth Policy and the future of the Lolo plan update and implementation project. It’s tonight at 7pm at the Lolo Community Center. Zane Goy-ko-vitch is a three year old Missoula boy who recently suffered seizures that left with him with epilepsy, sensory processing disorder, autism, and brain damage. Unfortunately, Zane is resistant to epilepsy drugs, but his family and the Missoula community are rallying to raise funds for an operation in Denver that may cure his epilepsy. Coming up at the Bitterroot Public Library this week is a variety of reading activities for both children and adults. Tomorrow morning is the Preschool story time with story teller Hennifer Crawford, Thursday is the Fellowship Club’s discussion of spiritual politics in the evening, and on Saturday is the Writer’s Workshop for youth ages 10-14. The Upper Clark Fork River Basin Steering Committee is meeting tomorrow in Deer Lodge. The meeting agenda will include planning for joint public meetings with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks regarding the transfer of the Milltown Dam water right to the state of Montana. This meeting is free and open to the public and will be held tomorrow morning from 9:30-Noon at St. Mary’s Center in Deer Lodge. Call 543-0026 for more details.

The World Affairs Council of Montana and the Alliance Francaise of Missoula will host a community discussion titled The US and Europe: Future Megatrends with Michael Maibach, President and CEO of the European American Business Council and former VP for Intel Corp. When’s the last time you had a Swedish pancake? Coming up this Thursday is your chance to eat a whole lot of them at the Missoula Senior Center! Their Swedish Pancake supper starts at 4pm and includes syrup, fruit, coffee, tea, and of course all you can eat pancakes for $5. Their phone number is 543-1573.

The 8th Annual ice cream social at the University of Montana is set for Sunday, September 13th! New and returning students are invited to the free street party from 3-5pm in the 400 block of the University Avenue. The mayor of Missoula will be there along with Monte, the Griz mascot, and live music by local group Baba Ganoush. Feel free to mingle, meet neighbors, and eat ice cream, all in celebration of the diversity and community of the University of Montana. For more information, call Jean at 721-3540.

A meeting about the Silver Bow Creek/Butte Area Superfund Site is coming up on September 14th. The Citizens Technical Environmental Committee of Butte Silver Bow will hold its monthly planning and informational meeting for the Month of September with guest speaker Sara Sparks, the Remedial Project Manager for the EPA. This meeting will take place at the Metal Sports Bar and Grill in Uptown Butte at 6pm on September 14th. It’s free and open to the public, with community members invited to come weigh in on Butte’s environmental condition. Call 723-6247 to find out more.

The Parenting Place in Missoula has some nurturing parenting classes coming up this fall. Running from 6-7:30 each Tuesday night from mid September through November, the classes inform parents how to nurture their children in wholesome, positive ways. The Flathead Audobon Society will host wildlife photographer Chris Peterson this month in Kalispell. He will present a program about the post-wildfire 2003 forests of Glacier National Park and the cool creatures that live there.
