Cates is the author of two previous widely-acclaimed novels, X Out Of Wonderland and Hunger in America, a New York Times Notable Book. His latest book is a novel titled, Freeman Walker.
Cates also works with the Missoula Writing Collaborative, teaching classes on the short story in public high schools. And, he is the executive director of Missoula Medical Aid and leads groups of medical professionals on trips to Honduras where they bring medical care to rural communities.
