Today's Highlight: The Environmental Ethics Institute of Missoula will be conducting a weekend seminar titled, “Women, Health, the Environment, and Social Justice.” Dr. Karen Warren, environmental thinker at Macalister College, will lead this two-day workshop exploring the interconnections among gender, health, environmental deterioration, and social justice. The workshop will be held on August 1st and 2nd at the new Journalism Building on the University of Montana campus. Dr. Warren will also be giving a free public lecture on July 31st at 7:00 pm at The University of Montana’s Gallagher Business Building. For more information regarding either event, call 243-5744.

The Cabin Fever Quilters of Mineral County in Superior invites everyone to their “Stars Over Montana” quilt show this Friday and Saturday, August 1st and 2nd from 10:00am to 6:00pm at the Superior High School Multipurpose Room, 400 Arizona Street. The show features quilter Katherine Raether, as well as an exhibit of quilts, a raffle quilt, a boutique, and door prizes. Learn how to coexist with wildlife from bear management and research experts, aversive conditioning specialists, and electric fencing experts at the Bear Fair this Saturday, August 2nd from 11:00 am to 4:00pm at the Hungry Bear Steak House backyard in Condon. The Wind River Bear Institute will begin the day with a demonstration by their Karelian Bear dogs with additional talks from grizzly bear and wildlife experts. The University of Montana’s Physics and Astronomy Department invites the public to spend a beautiful evening exploring the “Big Sky” at the Blue Mountain Observatory. Observing will begin at 10:30 pm on August 1, 8, 29, as well as September 5, 26, and October 3rd - weather permitting. Wear warm clothes, bring a flashlight, and be sure to call 243-5179 before heading up the mountain to listen to the message confirming the Open House Observations.
The Watershed Education Network is offering a fly fishing workshop in western Montana for participants 14 years or older. The workshop will take place the week of August 4 – 8, with a possible overflow week of August 11 – 15. The program will explore water stewardship, place-based writing, and sense of place recreation. To help prepare dancers for this year’s performance of the Nutcracker Suite, a dance workshop will take place at the Ballet Bitterroot Performing Arts in Corvallis for dancers ages 9 and up. The Missoula Art Museum is hosting the exhibit, “Our Familiar: Animal Myth and Reality” from July 30th to October 25th at the museum, 335 North Pattee. From the museum’s permanent collections, this exhibit features animal imagery embodying ideas of love for the natural world, political beliefs, shared memories, and secret selves. The Flathead City-County Health Department in Kalispell urges all parents of children who need immunizations and records for school this fall to obtain them now.
