Fitzpatrick was born in Anaconda, Montana, the eldest son of a smelter pipe fitter and a school teacher. In 1974, he earned a Ph.D in Sociology from Ohio State University.
While confined to bed for several weeks with a severe lung infection during graduate school, Fitzpatrick began reading mystery novels and became fascinated by the challenge of crafting an entertaining story. Sherlock Holmes: The Montana Chronicles is Fitzpatrick's first book.
