Today's Highlight: A documentary film entitled, “Obscene” about the life and work of one of the twentieth centuries most influential publishers, Barney Rosset, will be shown this Friday evening at 7:30pm at the Wilma Theatre in Missoula. The Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana is inviting anyone interested in back packing through the Gospel Hump Wilderness in Idaho to join them on 3 to 4 day trips monitoring weed infestations and recreational impacts in the forest. Volunteers will gain valuable GPS skills, learn the area’s natural history and be provided dinners and transportation from Missoula at no cost. Call 243-5361 by July 12th to register.
AFS, a leading international high school student exchange organization for over 60 years is looking for host families for exchange students in the Missoula area. Students stay with their host families for either six months or an academic year and arrive in August. Western Montana Fair grandstand reserved seats for the rodeo events, demolition derby and Nitty Gritty Dirt Band concert are available on-line starting today. This is the first year visitors are able to buy event tickets through www.westernmontanafair.com. For those without internet access, you can buy tickets over the phone at 721-3247.
The Montana historical Society’s nationally acclaimed photography exhibit exploring life in Montana from 1894 to 1928 through the eyes and diaries of Evelyn Cameron, opens July 4th at the Arlee Museum. The 47 striking images record the early days on the western frontier and the coming of the homesteaders all from a woman’s point of view. The Arlee Museum is on Highway 93, 18 miles north of Interstate 90 and 2 blocks east of the Hanging Art Coffee House. Call 726-3627 for more information.
The need for blood never takes a vacation. Help the American Red Cross during the third annual “Pump up the Volume” blood drive today at the Mountain West Bank in Missoula, 3301 Great Northern Ave until 2pm and at the Double Tree Hotel, 100 Madison Street, from 2 to 6pm. Habitat for Humanity of Missoula is having it’s fourth annual Youth Week, July 15th through 19th to introduce students to the organization and offer them opportunities to volunteer. Young people aged 5 to 20, can participate in age appropriate projects and workshops including creating stepping stones, craft projects, habitat & nature studies to actually building houses for volunteers over 16. Youth volunteers are also needed to help with lunches and snacks, assist with younger children activities and photograph the week’s events.
