Weltzien is a Professor of English at The University of Montana Western, in Dillon. He has had two Fulbright Fellowships (Poland, 1989-90; Bulgaria, 1997-98) and one UM faculty exchange (Australia, 2003).
Weltzien is editor, co-editor, or author of four books, most recently a memoir, A Father and an Island: Reflections on Loss (Lewis-Clark Press, 2008) and The Norman Maclean Reader (University of Chicago Press, 2008).
Weltzien is currently completing a lengthy article, "Thomas Savage, Forgotten Novelist" for publication in Montana: The Magazine of Western History. Savage is the most famous writer from Beaverhead County, and Weltzien is planning a larger work devoted to this fine--and unfairly forgotten--novelist. In addition, Weltzien has begun a project concerning Washington State's (five) volcanoes and the perils of mountaineering as a mass sport.
When not reading, teaching, or writing, Weltzien runs or climbs mountains.
