Today's Highlight: The Lewis and Clark County Fire Council of East Helena invites the public to a benefit planned for Lon Albers, a volunteer firefighter for the Tri-Lakes Volunteer Fire Department who was critically injured on April 7th. Lon has been in ICU for weeks and is facing months of rehabilitation as well as substantial medical costs. A benefit dinner that will include both live and silent auctions and activities for the kids is planned for Saturday, June 7th beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the East Valley Firestation #2. The American Red Cross is conducting a number of blood drawings this week. Today, they will be at First Choice Hamilton in their Blood Mobile, at the Red Cross in Kalispell, and at the St Anthony Parish in Missoula. On Thursday, June 5th they will be at the Plum Creek Timber Co in Pablo and at Mertin’s Information Service in Kalispell. On Friday, June 6th blood drawings will take place at the Sportsman’s Warehouse in Missoula and at the Red Cross Centers in Kalispell and Missoula. On Saturday, June 7th the public is invited to join co-workers, family, and friends for “Great Strides,” the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s walk event at McCormick Park in Missoula that will help raise money to find a cure for cystic fibrosis. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:00 o’clock. For more information on this event, call Jill at 363-2732.
The Missoula Senior Citizen’s Center is planning a series of Jam Sessions beginning at 3:00 p.m. on June 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th. The public is invited to bring instruments and “jam” with your friends. Refreshments will be available. For more information, call the Senior Citizen’s Center at 543-1573.
The supporters of Abuse-Free Environments, Inc. of Hamilton is currently recruiting volunteers to assist with its 24-hour crisis hotline and support programs. SAFE provides services for domestic abuse and sexual assault – including a 24-hour crisis line, adult and child support groups, emergency shelter and transitional housing for those in need. Training for new volunteers will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9th and will continue on consecutive Monday and Wednesday evenings as well as on two Saturdays through June 21st. The Missoula Public Library is sponsoring two book discussions on Montana author Michael Punke’s book, “Fire and Brimstone.” The first discussion will be held at 7:00 p. m. on Tuesday, June 10th and the second one on Thursday, June 12th at 10:00 a.m. at the Missoula Public Library. The Missoula City Band cordially invites the public to attend their series of band concerts every Wednesday evening in the Bonner Park Band Shell, on the corner of Ronald and Hastings Streets in Missoula. The first concert will be held at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 25th. From May 26-June 30th, customers who visit the Arby’s restaurants in the Missoula area may donate $1 and sign a “Help Us Help Kids” pin-up that will hang on the wall of the restaurant. Money that is raised will support Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Missoula. Currently, the program has 104 children waiting for a Big Brother or a Big Sister. The ASSE International Student Exchange Program is seeking local host families for the upcoming high school semester for students coming from a variety of countries around the world. The students are fully insured, will bring their own spending money, and will share in the household activities and responsibilities.
