Today's Highlight:
The National Geographic Society, Travel Montana, and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition are hosting community forums in Red Lodge, Ennis, Bozeman, and Livingston on May 12 – 21st. Participants will discuss sites and events to include on a new National Geographic MapGuide that will celebrate and help sustain the world-class natural and cultural heritage of the Greater Yellowstone region. Tonight the forum will begin at 6:30 at the First Madison Valley Bank in Ennis, on May 20th at 6:30 p.m. at the Emerson Center in Bozeman, and on Wednesday, May 21st at the Livingston Public Library at 7:00 pm. Tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the Missoula Public Library, teens ages 13 – 18 are invited to watch “Queer Youth Speak,” a documentary film of San Francisco teens responding to the “Out at the Library” exhibit. Then, following the film, join in a discussion led by members of the Hellgate High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance. Call the Missoula Public Library at 721-2665 if you’d like more information.
The public is invited to attend the Missoula Sustainable Business Council’s social get-together and awards presentation for businesses and individuals who contribute to sustainable practices in Western Montana. This will be followed by a presentation on socially-responsible investing and will be given by Susan Estep (EE-step), a personal investment advisor. This free event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 15th in the Stensrud Building Events Center, 314 N. 1st St West in Missoula. Call 370-2974 if you have any questions.
The Rose Park Neighborhood Council of Missoula invites neighborhood residents to a discussion of the construction of the Higgins/Beckwith roundabout, the progress of the Triangle Park, and other discussion topics. The Community Dispute Resolution Center of Missoula County and the UM Intercultural Youth and Family Development Program are sponsoring mediation trainings May 15th – 20th on the University campus in Missoula. The focus on May 16 – 18th will be the Fundamentals of Mediation, a training for beginning mediators. On May 19th and 20th, an advanced training will be given for those who want to do parenting plans with divorcing parents. If you are interested in learning these skills and would like to help your fellow citizens who are in conflict, please call 543-1157 for more information or registration materials.
Potsketch 2008 Action Gala will be held this Saturday, May 17th from 6:30 – 10:00 pm at the Missoula Children’s Theatre. Events include live music, raffle drawings, food catered by Paul Meyers of 515 and beverages. Tickets are available at the Clay Studio of Missoula, 1106 Hawthorne, Unit A or by calling 543-0509.
The Friends of the Darby Library invite the public to a “Garage-a-Rama,” a community garage sale of home, ranch and garden items, clothing, toys, jewelry, tools and more this Friday from 8 – 6 May 16th and from 8 – noon on Saturday, May 17th. The sale will be held at the Darby Community Clubhouse, 106 N. Main Street, and food and drinks will be available from the Trapper Creek Job Corps students. Call 821-0042 for more information
The Selway-Bitterroot Foundation of Hamilton is holding their Second-Annual Fundraiser this Saturday night, May 17th in the Hamilton City Hall Community Room, 223 S. Second Street. The festivities begin at 6:30 which will include a raffle and silent auction, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, wine, beer, and classical guitar music by Opus Three. Tickets are $20/person or $30/couple. The Headwaters RC&D and the Affordable Housing Network of Butte are holding a Homebuyers Education Class on May 20th and 21st from 5:00 to 9:00 pm at the Business Development Center, 305 West Mercury. The cost of the class is $10 and participants will learn about special affordable home financing options, budgeting and credit, the mortgage process, homeowner’s insurance and other aspects of homeownership.
