Today's Highlight: Families First of Missoula is sponsoring a number of
programs TONIGHT that are free and open to the public. A two-part communication skills refresher for partners, called “Tune Up for Couples,” will be held from 6 – 8 pm at Families First. A “Relatives as Parents” class will be given from 7 – 9 pm at the Missoula YMCA, and a class on “Positive Discipline for Early Childhood” will be held at the Pablo Headstart from 7 – 9 pm. TONIGHT at 6:30 a ‘Respect Club Book Release” will be held at Dauphines, 130 East Broadway in Missoula. Entitled, “InDifference,” the book offers a collection of poetry, art, photographs, comics, essays, and interviews from 11 – 14 year-old students. Call 541-6891 for additional information.
A free, award-winning outdoor and wildlife photography exhibit titled, “Irreplaceable: Wildlife in a Warming World,” will open tomorrow, May 8th at the Roxy Theatre in downtown Missoula. A free, Lupus, as well as Fibromyalgia and Auto-Immune Diseases Support group meeting will be held on Friday, May 9th from 7 – 9 pm in Kalispell at the Summit, Conference Room 3, 205 Sunnyview Lane. The Jeanette Rankin Peace Center and the UM Center for Irish Studies is sponsoring “The Cry of the Dreamer,” a multi-media presentation on the poet, John Boyle O’Rielly. This musical documentary will be held upstairs of The Higgins Alley, 424 North Higgins Ave in Missoula. The cost is $12 and the doors will open at 7:30 pm for the 8:00 o’clock show. The Missoula Aging Services encourages families, service clubs, or other groups to help Missoula County emergency responders test their readiness to deal with disaster by volunteering to be a disaster victim during a mock disaster drill. The drill will be conducted this Saturday, May 10th at the Missoula International Airport from 7 am to 3 pm. To volunteer or for more information, contact Helen at 728-7682.
The Wheeler Center at Montana State University is hosting a statewide public conference on climate change, agriculture, and energy on May 12th and 13th. The conference will be of particular interest to those in the agricultural and energy sectors, the educational community, and environmentally-based organizations. The Montana Discovery Foundation and the Helena National Forest will be offering a May moonlight hike around the Helena Valley Regulating Reservoir to watch arriving migratory birds. This family friendly hike will take place from 7 – 9 pm on Saturday, May 17th. Reservations are currently open by calling Sam at 495-3718.
The Big Sky State Games Character Counts Scholarship application deadline is approaching. The Games will offer a $500 scholarship to a female and male athlete who best exemplifies character in athletics, community and school. The scholarship is open to high school juniors who have participated in the Games and will be awarded at the 2008 Opening Ceremonies of Friday, July 18th at Wendy’s Field at Daylis Stadium in Billings. Applications are available at high school counselor offices statewide, or online at www.bigskygames.org.
The Youth Homes of Missoula is seeking people to join their ”Run 4 Kids” team in the Missoula Marathon which will be held on July 13th. This is a wonderful way to accomplish a personal achievement by walking or running a full or half marathon while you’ll also be making a difference in the lives of children in our communities.
