Today's Highlight: The Missoula Public Library will be offering a number of activities to the public this week. On Thursday, April 3rd at 7:00 pm, poet Lowell Jaeger will kick off a month-long celebration with a program titled, “Losing Your Mind: How to Read Poems/How to Write Them.” This program will be a thought-provoking yet light-hearted view of the art of reading and writing poems. Then, on Saturday, April 5th at 1:00 pm a Poetry Workshop for Teens will be held to help teens tap into their inner poets. And finally, on Tuesday, April 8th at 6:00 pm a Teen Poetry Slam will be held where teens can read an original or classic favorite and will be awarded prizes by judges selected from the audience. This Friday night from 5:30 – 7:00 pm a dance workshop titled, “Live Drums of Passion – Dancing the Five Elements with Nia” will be held upstairs in the Missoula Children’s Theatre on the corner of Adams and Broadway in downtown Missoula. Tickets are $15 before the event and $20 at the door and will be available at the Women’s Club. Call Barbara at 360-9983 for more information.

The Institute of Medicine and Humanities of Missoula is hosting a series of free public lectures every Friday morning in April. The first of the series is titled, “Ethics and Patient Safety: From Good Intentions to Good Actions” and will be presented by Ann Cook and Helena Hoas of the National Rural Bioethics Project. The lecture will be given at 8:00 am on Friday, April 4th in the St Patrick Hospital Conference Center, 500 West Broadway. Call 327-3162 if you’d like further information.

The Garden City Harvest will host the Opening Day of the Missoula Community Garden season on Saturday, April 5th from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Everyone is invited to grow your own vegetables this summer at one of their six community gardens. Each garden offers tools, water, compost, and advice for your gardening needs. Returning gardeners should come to the garden from 9:00 – 11:00 am to reserve your garden plot from last year and new gardeners can come from 11:00 – 2:00 to reserve a plot. Fees are $25 per season, plus a refundable $15 deposit for first-year gardeners. The Missoula Senior Citizens’ Center will host two dances on Saturday, April 5th. Those people who don’t want to stay out late can come to an early afternoon dance at 1:00 o’clock which will feature the “Country Combo”. At 7:30 pm, the Dance Studio will present a “Swing Into Spring” spring dance with music provided by the Jodi Marshall Trio and Melody. Tango lessons will be given at 7:30 and the dance will be held from 8:30 – 11:30 pm. The cost for this dance is $12 per person. For more information, call Sandy at 239-6044.

The University of Montana’s School of Fine Arts will honor Beth Lo and David Simmons, two versatile artists and UM alumni at the upcoming eighth-annual “Odyssey of the Stars – A Celebration of Artistic Journeys.” This year’s event, titled, “A Kaleidoscope of Sights and Sounds,” will begin at 7:30 pm, Saturday, April 5th in the University Theatre on the UM campus. Tickets are $30 for adults, $15 for UM students, with “Odyssey” sponsorships also available for purchase. Tickets can be purchased at all GrizTix locations, by phone to 243-4051, or online at www.griztix.com. All proceeds from this event will go to the UM School of Fine Arts scholarships. Pat Andrews of the US Forest Service Missoula Fire Sciences Lab will present a program on wildland fire behavior that will include factors influencing fire behavior and other topics. This free presentation will provide insight for citizens seeking to implement the appropriate management on their property and will be given at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 10th at the Condon Work Center, 6887 Highway 83, near mile marker 43. The Ravalli County Kids Health Screening will be held at Darby Elementary on Tuesday, April 8th from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm and on Wednesday, April 9th at the Florence Old Gym from 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm. These free screenings are intended for children from birth through five years of age. The children will be screened in the areas of vision, hearing, behavior, social-emotional development, and problem solving. An immunization review will also be completed. The Missoula Aging Services and the Western Montana Volunteer Center is sponsoring a series of free monthly, lunch-hour programs designed to bring together community organizations which rely on volunteers. The first brown bag series is titled, “Volunteer Management in 55 Minutes,” and will be held from noon to 1:00 pm at the Missoula Aging Services, 337 Stephens Ave in Missoula. Participants may bring a brown bag lunch and are asked to register in advance by calling 728-7682.

The Area Central Labor Council Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce the availability of College and Vocational-Technical School Scholarships for 2008. To receive a scholarship, the student or one parent must belong to a union that is affiliated with the AFL-CIO or the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and must reside in, or be employed in Granite, Mineral, Missoula, or Ravalli County.
