During his high school years, Wolfe worked in saw mills and forests in Western montana. Then later, as an underground miner in Butte. After he returned to Missoula, he worked as a potter, sculptor, and still photographer before beginning a thirty-year career as an independent filmmaker. Wolfe has had two exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and twice represented the United States in International film festivals.
After his controversial films had offended nearly everyone connected to funding sources, Wolfe turned to writing. The Boy Who Invented Skiing is his fourth book.

And here's a quote from Swain Wolfe:
"I don't tell stories about drunks, crazy people, or druggies because they don't hold my attention. Too often they do the same things over and over without solving the problem or discovering anthing of interest about themselves or the world."
