Today's Highlight: On Thursday, March 13th four high school students and their teacher will give a presentation about a recent trip to Chiapas, Mexico where they learned firsthand the effects of NAFTA, fair trade, immigration, and U.S. foreign policy on the people of Mexico. Come listen to their stories and questions about fair trade and supply-side wars at 7:30 pm in the North Urey Underground Lecture Hall on the University of Montana campus. The University of Montana Peace and Justice Film Series continues on Thursday evening, March 13th with a documentary titled, “Homelands, Four Portraits of Native Action.” This film is about the environmental hazards faced by almost all Indian reservations, and the actions four of them have taken to protect themselves. The free documentary will be shown at 5:30 pm and again at 7:30 pm in the University Center Theatre on The University of Montana campus.

The Missoula Senior Center is presenting numerous offerings this weekend beginning with a Swedish pancake supper from 4 – 6 pm on Thursday, March 13th with a cost of $5.00 per person. Then, on Saturday, March 15th an afternoon dance will begin at 1:00 o’clock. And finally on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17th, a the traditional holiday lunch, including corned beef and cabbage will be served from 11:30 – 12:30, followed by a silent auction with over 100 items up for bid. The Third Annual Missoula Area Central Labor Council Film Festival will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 14th and 15th at the Roxy Theater, 718 South Higgins. The Festival features four documentaries and one full-length feature film, each looking at the difficulties and issues of working Americans. The series will begin on Friday at 6:30 pm with the documentary, “In Debt We Trust.” All screenings are free with a recommended donation of $5.00. This Saturday, March 15th from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm, the Children’s Museum of Missoula is sponsoring local photographer, Crackle Bingham who will be the at the Museum and ready to capture the smiles of your little ones. Crackle will take several quick shots of your child’s best side and create an 8 X 12 picture to display in the Museum during the April 4th First Friday Art Walk. The cost of each picture is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Call Karen at the Children’s Museum at 541-7529 to reserve your spot.

The University of Montana Physical Therapy Student Association is holding an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast and an inaugural Bust-A-Gut 5k race this Saturday, March 15th at Christ the King Church, 1400 Gerald Ave. in Missoula. Registration begins at 7:30 am, the race will start at 9:00 am, and breakfast will be served from 8:00 am to noon. Call Audrey at 721-8720 for more information.

This Sunday at 3:00 pm, the Charlo High School Gymnasium will come alive with the sound of braying and hee-hawing as the Charlo Close-Up students take on the Charlo Fire Department, the Charlo faculty and the Charlo alumni in rousing games of Donkey Ball. A barbeque will begin at 2:00 pm in front of the gym as well as a “Meet the Donkeys” session where students and adults will be able to meet the donkeys providing the day’s entertainment. The Flathead Audubon Society is sponsoring the first part of a Lower Valley Waterfowl Tour this Sunday, March 16th. Meet at 8:30 am at the Somers Park ‘N Ride, located at the intersection of US Highway 93 and Montana Highway 82. This will be a 4-hour tour of the wetland sites near Somers and in the lower Flathead valley to see migratory waterfowl. For more information, call Leslie in the evenings at 837-4467.

Everyone is invited to meet new friends and the new Missoula Brain Injury Group Facilitator by joining all survivors and caregivers for the Missoula Brain Support Group meeting. The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm this Monday, March 17th at the St. Patrick Hospital Duran Learning Center. Irish refreshments will be provided. Call Jim at 728-9117 with any questions.

The registration deadline is next Wednesday, March 19th for the Headwaters RC&D and the National Affordable Housing Network’s Homebuyers Education Class. Participants will learn about special affordable home financing options, including down payment and closing cost assistance programs for eligible homebuyers. The two-night class will also present information on budgeting and credit, the mortgage process, homeowners insurance, and other aspects of homeownership. The first class will be given Saturday, March 22nd from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Business Development Center, 305 West Mercury in Butte. The cost is $10 per person.
