Today's Highlight: The Flathead Chapter of the Montana Native Plant society is offering a slide presentation to be given by Tim Ryan titled, “Local American Indian Traditional Use of the Environment.” The presentation will focus on health benefits of eating a traditional diet and will present a hands-on look at traditional materials. The presentation will be given tonight at 7:00 pm at the Flathead County Library, 247 1st Ave East in Kalispell. Call Jen at 863-9630 if you’d like further details.

The Montana Discovery Foundation and the Helena National Forest will be offering a free, March moonlight hike to Strawberry Lookout. This family-friendly 2-mile hike will take place from 7 to 9 pm on Wednesday, March 19th and if there is snow, snowshoes will be provided. To reserve your spot, call Sam at 459-3718.

The 3rd annual Experience Art Week will take place in Butte on March 6th – 8th and will include activities for the entire family. Events scheduled include a Youth Art Exhibition, an evening of music by Montana Tech faculty, staff, and students at the Venus Rising Café, and dozens of art workshops and documentaries by local professional artists. On Thursday, March 6th from noon to 1:00 pm, Valery Nikonorov, Visiting Fulbright Scholar at Rutgers University, will be presenting a lecture titled, “The Art of Warfare in Central Asia.” The lecture and brown bag discussion will take place in room 303 of the Old Journalism Building on the University of Montana campus in Missoula. The 7th annual “Honoring Our Youth” celebration, a cultural celebration recognizing and honoring American Indian heritage in the Missoula County Public Schools, will be held Friday and Saturday, March 7 – 8th at Big Sky High School in Missoula. Friday night’s activities will begin at 7:00 and Saturday’s events will begin at 1:00 o’clock and continue with a potluck diner from 5:00 – 7:00 pm. A monster Moonlight Madness Rummage Sale and Party for the Montana Human Rights Network Legal Defense Fund will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Warehouse Mall in Missoula, near St. Patrick’s Hospital between Spruce and Alder streets. The sale begins on Friday from 5:00 – 11:00 pm with an insanely enormous selection! Also featured on Friday is music provided by DJ Kylie & Vintage Vinyl Revival, a cash bar by Badlander, and food by Mother Trucker. Saturday is Bargain Day and a Bake Sale with free coffee from 8:00 am to noon. Volunteers are especially needed. The Soroptimist International of Helena and Helena Heritage is sponsoring a community mother and baby shower this Saturday, March 8th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Lewis and Clark Public Library, 120 South Last Chance Gulch in Helena. Donations of new items are most welcome for mothers and babies in the Helena community who cannot obtain the basic necessities on their own. The items for mother and baby will be distributed through the Lewis and Clark City-County Health Department. To make a donation or if you have any questions, call 443-1793.

Missoula’s working poor need a hand up and you can help. A “Habitat for Humanity 101” introduction will be held at 5:30 next Tuesday, March 11th in the Board Room of the Missoula Public Library. Registration is now open and space is limited for the Montana Natural History Center’s Spring Break Nature Detectives Day Camp scheduled March 24th through the 28th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The camp is for second through fifth grade students and will keep kids engaged in learning and having fun with exploration activities, local field trips, games, and arts and crafts. The NWS Peace Program invites caring families from across Montana to host high school students from a variety of countries for the 2008 fall semester. The students are 15 – 18 years of age, speak English, have medical insurance, their own spending money, and look forward to learning about our culture.
