Today's Highlight: Families First of Missoula will be presenting a “Relatives as Parents” workshop tonight from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the YMCA. The program will help kinship families find answers to difficult questions, gain access to resources and receive support through a community of families in similar situations. This class is free and childcare is provided. Families First is also presenting the free workshop, “Your Teen’s Desire for Independence” from 7:00 – 9:00 pm at the Pablo Headstart. Topics to be covered are adolescence, peer pressure, and how to support your child as he or she deals with social interactions and grapples with moral issues. A preschool screening clinic for children ages 0 through 5 in the Lolo and Woodman School Districts will be held tomorrow, February 28th, starting at 9:00 am. The screening will include gross motor, fine motor, language concepts, communication skills, hearing and vision screening. A free, “Open Studio Night for Teens Ages 13 - 18” will be held tomorrow night, February 28th from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Missoula Art Museum, 335 North Pattee Street. The evening allows participants to discuss contemporary art in the galleries, view live demos on new methods and materials, and explore the Museum’s materials to create their own artwork. Tomorrow, February 28th, marks the deadline for an employer or accredited training provider to register for the Western Montana Employment and Training Fair hosted by the Missoula Job Service. The fair is intended for organizations to network with job seekers and fill vacancies. The cost is $125 per table. The Missoula City-County Health Dept. is currently offering flu shots every Monday through Friday mornings from 9:00 – 11:30 and from 1:00 – 4:30 each afternoon, with the exception on Wednesday mornings, when the distribution begins an hour later, at 10:00 am. The cost for the shot is $20 for adults and $14 for children through the age of 18. Medicaid and Medicare will be billed with proof of coverage cards. For questions, please call 258-4966.
211/First Call for Help, a service of the Human Resource Council and United Way of Missoula County, is a telephone information and referral service offering help locating assistance with food, housing, daycare, support groups, and other human services. Call 211/First Call for Help between the hours of 10:00 – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, if you have any questions.
A new, nationwide initiative enables volunteers to track climate change by observing the timing of flowers and foliage. Project BudBurst, operated by The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research and a team of partners that includes The University of Montana, allows students, gardeners, and other citizen scientists in every state to enter their observations into an online database at www.budburst.org. University of Montana researchers Carol Brewer and Paul Alaback are collaborators on the Project BudBurst, along with the Chicago Botanic Garden. If you are a low- or moderate-income taxpayer and haven’t filed your taxes yet, you may still take advantage of free tax preparation services in Missoula. Openings are available on some Mondays and Wednesdays at the Missoula Aging Services, 337 Stephens Ave., and at special Saturday events on March 8th and 22nd which offer tax preparation assistance and financial information. The Missoula Museum of Art is presenting a retrospective exhibit of the ceramic work of David Shaner, titled, “Following the Rhythms of Life: The Ceramic Art of David Shaner.” The exhibit runs from February 19th – May 31, with a reception and Curator’s Gallery Talk by Peter Held on Friday, March 7th at 7:00 pm. An Artist’s reception will also be held on March 7th at the Missoula Art Museum for Molly Murphy whose beadwork will be on exhibit from March 7th – May 24th.
