Today's Highlight: The Office of Neighborhoods in Missoula is offering a free “Neighborhood Council Orientation” to citizens who want to help change, preserve, or improve their neighborhood. The orientation will introduce citizens to the neighborhood councils, provide information regarding available resources from the city, introduce programs that help improve neighborhoods, and other information on building a working relationship with the city. The orientation will begin at 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 21st at Bethel Baptist Church, 1601 South 16th Street West. Call 552-6081 for additional details.
The University of Montana Peace and Justice Film Series continues on Thursday, February 21st at 5:30 and 7:30 pm with a screening of the documentary, “Why We Fight.” The film is a chronicle of what President Eisenhower called the Military-Industrial Complex. When war is profitable, it becomes inevitable. The film is free and open to the public and will be shown in the University Center Theater on campus.
The Children’s Museum of Missoula will be closed from March 9 – 13th for renovations and installation of new exhibits. They are looking for help with carpentry, painting, and exhibit component assembly and there will be a community meeting at 6:00 pm on Thursday, February 21st at the Museum to discuss plans. The Missoula Caring for Creation Network is sponsoring visits to the local offices of Senators Max Baucus, Jon Tester and Congressman Dennis Rehberg to urge action on global warming. Everyone is invited to join them at 1:30 pm this Friday February 22, beginning at Sen. Tester’s office, 116 W. Front. Call 728-6049 for more information.
The first annual Reel to Real Food Film Festival will be held in Missoula on February 22-24 at the Roxy and Crystal theatres. Featured are three films as well as a family-friendly matinee of shorts on Saturday the 23rd. Come learn more about our local food and agriculture system, see how Missoula compares with other places around the country, and connect with others interested in good food! “The Shaman’s Dream,” a one-day intensive retreat focusing on the Shamanic Practices of Journeying, Soul Retrieval, and Visioning will be held this Saturday, February 23rd from 10:00 am at 8:00 pm. The retreat will be held at the Quaker Meeting House, located on the corner of 12th and Grant in Missoula. The fee for this retreat is $95 which includes a catered dinner. REI and the GrizzlyMan Adventure Race will hold the first clinic in a series of three focusing on Adventure Racing Basics at 7:00 pm this Sunday, February 24th at REI, 2320 North Reserve Street. Included in the clinic are lessons on what you need to do to train and prepare for this endurance race. The clinic is free and open to everyone, even if you don’t plan on racing. The Bike/Walk Alliance for Missoula is calling all members and potential members to their first annual members meeting at Christ the King Church Lower Center. A potluck will precede the meeting at 6:00 pm and the business meeting will begin at 7:00. Agenda items include a review of the first year of activities, election of a new Board of Directors, and a discussion of what the Alliance plans to accomplish in the coming year. An adult clarinet ensemble, the Missoula Area Single Reed on a Wooden Horn Society, will perform a recital at 3:00 pm this Sunday, February 24th at the University Congregational Church, located at 405 University Ave. in Missoula. The Headwaters RC& D and Habitat for Humanity of Dillon will hold a Homebuyers Education Class from 5:00 – 9:00 pm next Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26th and 27th at the County Courthouse, 2 South Pacific Drive. The cost is $10 per person. Covered in the class will be special affordable home financing options, including down payment and closing cost assistance programs for eligible first-time homebuyers. Other information to be presented will be on budgeting and credit, the mortgage process, homeowners insurance, and other aspects of homeownership.
