Today's Highlight: The University of Montana’s Peace and Justice Film Series will present the documentary film, “The United States vs. John Lennon.” The documentary discusses how the United States government tried to deport John Lennon for his peace movement activities. The film will be shown tomorrow night, Thursday, January 31st at 5:30 and at 7:30 pm in the University Center Theatre on the UM campus. Admission is by donation.

Pam Haglund of Kalispell will give a talk regarding the various cities and people she met on her recent trip to Iran. The talk will take place on Thursday, January 31st at the West Shore Community Library in Lakeside. A reception will take place at 6:30 and Haglund’s illustrated talk will begin at 7:00 pm. The Missoula International School will hold its annual benefit, “The Salsa Ball,” this Saturday, February 2nd at the Holiday Inn Parkside. The doors will open at 5:30 and admission is on the school in exchange for a donation. A dinner will be followed by dancing to the soulful sounds of Reverend Slanky. The “We Are Missoula” coalition continues its efforts to raise awareness about anti-gay violence in the community through a public skate night at the Glacier Ice Rink. Ice skating will commence on Saturday, February 2nd, from 8:30 pm – 10:30 pm. There will be a $5 suggested donation to the Hate Crimes Survivors Fund and skate rentals are $3.00. The Missoula Senior Center, located at 705 South Higgins will hold a Ground Hog Day Dance, beginning at 1:30 in the afternoon on Saturday, February 2nd. Music will be provided by Tom and Judy Dempsey – The Accordion Duo. Admission is $2.00. Call the Center at 543-1573 if you have any questions.

Liza Ward will be reading from her novel, Outside Valentine, on Saturday, February 2nd at 2:00 pm at the Grizzly Claw Trading Company in downtown Seeley Lake. Join the Alpine Artisans for refreshments and conversation with Liza after the reading. Call Martha at 793-5706 for more information.

The River Street Dance Theatre of Hamilton is hosting its 5th annual Mardi Gras Dance Party and Silent Auction on Saturday, February 2nd from 7 – 11:00 pm at the studio, 421 North 2nd Street. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and Cajun-style refreshments will be served. Call 363-1203 with any questions.

The public is invited to attend the Missoula Art Museum’s 36th Benefit Art Auction this Saturday, February 2nd at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3720 North Reserve St. Festivities begin with cocktails served at 5:30 pm followed by silent auction bidding and an auction preview. The auction, itself, features over 90 original and contemporary works in a diverse range of media. Call the Missoula Art Museum at 728-0447 to make your reservations by Friday, February 1st.

The YWCA of Missoula is seeking mentors who are interested in violence prevention and empowering young women for their “GUTS Program” The women volunteers lead workshops, after-school groups, community service projects and summer outdoor wilderness adventures. Applications can be downloaded at the YWCA Website: www.ywcamissoula.org. Two training sessions will be held on Monday, February 4th and Wednesday, February 6th from 6 – 9:00 pm. The public is invited to join Territorial Landworks, Inc. and the Missoula County Public Works at 4:00 pm on Monday, February 4th in the Bonner School Cafeteria to discuss the second and final phase of the Bonner-Turrah Trail. The public is invited to observe whether the Groundhog’s western cousin, “Bitterroot Bill,” will see its shadow. This fun, family activity will take place on Saturday, February 2nd from 11 am to 1:00 pm at the Visitor Center of the Lee Metcalf Wildlife Refuge in Stevensville. To support the Great Falls YWCA’s soup/lunch fundraising event called “Empty Bowls,” the YWCA is calling all artisans to donate a pottery bowl or two for this event which will be held on February 5th, 6th, and 7th. If you can donate a bowl, please contact Jill in Great Falls at 452-1315.

The St Patrick Hospital and Health Sciences Center of Missoula will be conducting a free Heart Expo in the Broadway Building this Saturday, February 2, from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm. Some of the activities include heart demonstrations, presentations by physicians and staff, a Life Flight Helicopter visit, free glucose and lipid screening, and more.
