Everyone is invited to an organizational meeting to create a brown bag book discussion group that plans to meet the 4th Thursday of each month at the Bitterroot Public Library in Hamilton. Please bring your ideas for books, topics, and genres. The first meeting will be held this Friday, January 25th from 12:00 noon to 1:00 o’clock in the West Meeting Room of the Library, 306 State Street. Call Nansy if you have any questions at 363-1670.
The Open Way Mindfulness Center of Missoula will hold a public talk on Solidity and Freedom to be given by Michael Ciborski. Ciborski is a lineage-holding dharma teacher in the tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh and will be discussing the practice of mindfulness in the midst of turmoil. The talk is free and will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday evening, January 25th at the Unity Church, 546 South Avenue. Call 549-9005 if you have any questions.
The Montana Repertory Theatre on Missoula is celebrating its 40th birthday this Saturday, January 26th and everyone is invited to attend its birthday celebration and performance of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Hors d’oevres and coctails will be served at 6:30 pm and after the show, dessert and dancing will culminate the evening. Tickets are $50.00 each and reservations can be made by calling 243-6809.
A new workshop at Travelers’ Rest near Lolo offers participants a chance to walk away in their own moccasins. Teacher and leather worker Tom Lukomski will lead this workshop on Saturday, January 26th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and participants are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Cost for this workshop is $65 per person and includes all supplies necessary to make the moccasins. For more information or to register, call 273-4253.
The Montana Natural History Center is conducting several activities this winter for kids of ALL ages. This Saturday, January 26th a winter ice painting class will take place where everyone learns cool facts about snow and ice as well as paint with different colors of ice. Also, each Saturday at 2:00 pm, an outdoor activity program will run for about an hour. And finally, back by popular request are the crazy antics by Pat Hagan who will help everyone learn how birds use their brains to solve tricky problems. As part of the Missoula Public Library’s series to coincide with its traveling exhibit, “Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America,” Dr. Nancy Cooper and friends of the University of Montana Dept. of Music will present a program of historical music on Monday, January 28th at 7:30 pm in the UM Music Recital Hall. Also at the Missoula Public Library, Mitch Grady, the “philosopher extraordinaire,” will hold an informal philosophical discussion at their “Socrates Café” on Tuesday, January 29th at 7:00 pm. The Headwaters RC & D and the National Affordable Housing Network of Butte are holding a two-part Homebuyer’s Education Class. Classes will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, January 30th and 31st from 5:00 – 9:00 pm at the Business Development Center, 305 West Mercury. The cost of the class is $10 per person and $15 per couple. These classes will cover information on budgeting and credit, the mortgage process, homeowners insurance, and other aspects of homeownership. Raffle tickets are currently on sale for one lucky couple to win a winter wonderland weekend getaway! On Saturday, February 23rd one lucky couple will win a moonlit dogsled ride to Garnet Ghost Town, an evening in a warm, historic miner’s cabin, and hot, homemade meals. Sustainable Living Systems will hold a Public showing of the video “Five Planets: Montanans at the Crossroads of Global Warming” on January 31st at 7:00 pm in the Hamilton Library Meeting Room. This video looks at a variety of perspectives on global warming, including transportation, construction, agriculture, forestry, government and more. A discussion will follow this one hour film. The Wilderness Institute at the University of Montana is calling for proposals to the Matthew Hansen Endowment. The Endowment’s goal is to encourage mindful stewardship of the land and contribute to the preservation of Montana’s cultural heritage. Its time to dust of your putter, put aside the winter blahs and sign up for the Hamilton Soroptimist award-winning Winter Golf Tournament to be held Saturday, February 2nd in downtown Hamilton. Over 15 businesses have designed 18 challenging mini-golf holes for the players’ entertainment. Teams must be over the age of 18 and costumes are encouraged.
