Today's Highlight: The 2008 Winter Special Olympics will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday,January 29th and 30th at the Lost Trail/Powder Mountain Ski Resort. A large number of volunteers are needed and NO winter skills are required. If you’re interested in volunteering, call Linda at New Horizons Physical Therapy at 363-2570.
The Missoula Art Museum, located at 335 North Pattee, is currently offering several art classes for the upcoming months. An interactive figure drawing class with a live model will be held every Wednesday evening from 6 – 8 pm. Also a fun, Family Art class will be held every second Saturday of each month from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon. A $5.00 donation is suggested per class. The Third Thursday Book Discussion Group will hold their monthly book discussion this Thursday, January 17th at 7:00 pm in the small meeting room of the Missoula Public Library, 301 East Main Street. This month’s book is Ian McEwan’s "Saturday." This free event is open to the public and you can call 251-5921 if you have any questions.
The Montana Human Rights Network will be holding its 5th annual Martin Luther King Day Celebration on Friday, January 18th at the Wilma Theatre in Missoula, 131 South Higgins. A catered reception with U.S. Senator, John Tester, will be held from 5:30 – 6:45 pm, which will be followed by a short speech by the senator as well as the screening of the critically acclaimed film, “Citizen King.” Tickets for this event may be purchased at the Wilma Theatre or from the Montana Human Rights Network at www.mhrn.org. The public is cordially invited to the Sandpiper Art Gallery and Gift Shop’s member art show beginning this Friday, January 18th and running through March 1st. An opening reception will be held on Friday from 5 – 7 pm at the Sandpiper Art Gallery, 2 First Avenue East in the Polson Library Building in Polson. “Illegal Abortion in Montana History: 1883 – 1972,” will be presented by Rep. Diane Sands in the large meeting room of the Missoula Public Library this Saturday morning, January 19th from 10:30 am – 12:30 pm. The program summarizes 35 years of research and is sponsored by AAUW Missoula, BPW Missoula, UM Students for Choice, and NARAL Pro-Choice Montana. The program is free and open to the public. “The Real Dirt on Farmer John,” an award-winning documentary about a family farm that turns to organic practices to save their land will be shown at 7:00 pm on Saturday, January 19th at the Open Way Mindfulness Center, 702 Brooks in Missoula. Everyone is welcome to attend the Basin-Contra Dance, sponsored by the Montana Artists Refuge. The AM String Band is featured for this community dance which will be held at 7:00 pm this Saturday evening, January 19th in the Montana Community Hall on Main Street in Basin. The Headwaters RC & D and the National Affordable Housing Network of Butte are holding a two-part Homebuyer’s Education Class. Classes will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, January 30th and 31st from 5:00 – 9:00 pm at the Business Development Center, 305 West Mercury. The cost of the class is $10 per person and $15 per couple. These classes will cover information on budgeting and credit, the mortgage process, homeowners insurance, and other aspects of homeownership.
