Afropop Worldwide for January 09, 2008 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM [Program Website]
Today's Highlight: "Afropop Worldwide's Visit to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia"
Ethiopians are very proud of their history as a non-colonized country with a tradition of Christianity and liturgical music dating back to the 3rd century. They have their own alphabet and an ancient system of music notation. In this program we go to contemporary Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, where we dive into the local music scene. We enter azmaribets, down home music clubs featuring vivacious women artists and their ensembles of traditional players. We catch Besat live. We witness the fierce competition between the leading music producers in Addis. We visit the recording studio of Abegasu Shiote who breaks down the Ethiopian pop sound track by track. And then of course--the top pop tunes blasting from market stalls and car stereos.
A one-hour weekly showcase of music and information from Africa, the Caribbean, and the Americas. Hosted by Georges Collinet from Cameroon, Afropop Worldwide draws on an unprecedented array of reporters, artists, and cultural guides to present an hour that is authoritative, comprehensive, and hugely entertaining.
Afropop Worldwide blends a rich array of global music with lively interviews and insightful stories on world-class talents and the music they create. Each carefully crafted broadcast features live concert tape, exclusive interviews, visits to musicians' houses, urban ambiance from around the African Diaspora, and rare recordings.
