Today's Highlight: Welcome to The Write Question, a program that explores the world of writing and publishing in the western United States. Our guest today is author Debra Magpie Earling from Missoula, Montana.
LISTEN TO THE PROGRAM

Earling is a member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai tribes of the Flathead Indian Reservation. In addition to writing, Earling teaches fiction and Native American studies at the University of Montana.
Her first book, Perma Red, received a Western Writers Association Spur Award for Best Novel of the West; the Mountain and Plains Bookseller Association Award; WWA’s Medicine Pipe Bearer Award for Best First Novel; a Willa Literary Award; and the American Book Award. It is a Montana Book Award Honor Book and was chosen by Barnes and Noble as part of its “Discover Great New Writers” series. Earling’s stories have appeared in The Last Best Place: A Montana Anthology; Talking Leaves: Contemporary Native American Short Stories; Circle of Women: Anthology of Western Women Writers; and Wild Women: Anthology of Women Writers. Earling’s current work-in-progress is supported by a Guggenheim Fellowship.
