Today's Highlight: "December's Quiet Joy," an evening of Christmas and winter music will be presented by KUFM's own John Floridis as an offering to relax in the midst of the holiday hubbub and hear music of the season in a fresh, new light. To support his new album, "December's Quiet Joy," John's free performance will be held at the Crystal Theater in Missoula at 7:30 pm tomorrow night, December 20th.
The "Third Thursday Book Group," which meets at the Missoula Public Library, will discuss Seth Kantner's first novel, Ordinary Wolves, on Thursday, December 20th at 7 pm in the small meeting room on the lower level. Also at the Library on Thursday, enjoy an early American holiday celebration in honor of the Library's traveling exhibit on Alexander Hamilton. The reception will feature early American holiday food and decorations, a string quartet with members of the Missoula Symphony Orchestra, and a minuet performed by dancers from the Rocky Mountain Ballet. Internationally known jazz artist Eden Atwood will appear at Rockin Rudy’s in Missoula on Thursday, December 20th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm to sell and sign five of her CDs, one of which has never before been released in the United States. All of the net proceeds will go to children in need through the Watson’s Children’s Shelter and YWCA Missoula. A gallery talk with exhibiting artist Patricia Thornton will be given at the “Artini” at 7pm on Thursday, December 20th at the Missoula Art Museum. Other exhibits currently on display at the Museum are “Birthweight,” by Eliazbeth Dove, a series of recently completed paintings as well as preliminary sketches completed by George Gogas, and “The Yellowstone Pipeline Series by Corwin Clairmont. "A Turning Point in Time," a winter solstice community celebration, will be held this Friday, December 21st at the Orchard Homes Country Life Club, 2537 South 3rd Street West in Missoula. The spoken word, song, movement, and meditation will be presented, with music performed by Beth Youngblood. All are welcome, and are invited to bring a potluck dish to share with everyone.
"Cheap Date Night" is back at the Missoula Public Library this Friday, December 21st at 7 pm. Sail the Caribbean for a third time with your favorite pirate, Johnny Depp. The movie and popcorn are free; just bring a drink and your friends. “Evergreen Eve,” a dance and dessert benefit for the Evergreen Kids’ Corner in Hamilton will be held at 7 pm this Friday, December 21st at the Hamilton Playhouse, 43 Rickets Road. A special performance by the Sapphire dance students is featured and will be followed by a decadent dessert and champagne reception. For ticket prices and to make your reservations, call 961-4055.
The Flathead Audubon Society will conduct their annual Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 30th. The group will gather to organize at 7:30 in the morning at Finnegan's Restaurant, 660 East Idaho in Kalispell. Participants will count all birds in a designated part of a count circle or, count your feeder birds. Less experienced folks will be paired with more skilled observers. The Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club is currently selling raffle tickets for a night at the Gordon Reese Cabin and dinner for four on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00, and may be purchased at Club meetings, Chapter One Bookstore, Gas & Grub, Slope & Spoke, and the Valley Bike in Hamilton as well as Caffe Firenze in Florence. Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the volunteer trail grooming expenses. The trails are free and open to the public. Call Earl at 961-0101 if you'd like more information.
