Today's Highlight:

The Missoula Sentinel School Bands will perform fine holiday music for the public tomorrow, December 19th at 7:30 pm in the Margaret Johnson Theatre. A hosted reception will follow in the foyer. Honorary admission is a non-perishable food item for the Food Bank. Call 728-2403 ext. 7041 for more details.

The Bitterroot Audubon will sponsor the 43rd annual Stevensville Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 29th. Birders of all skill levels are invited to participate with the emphasis on having fun and learning about birds and their habitats, in addition to collecting data. Birders can either be field observers or stay home and count birds on their own property. Field observers meet at the Stevensville Ranger station at 7:30 am. On the 29th. To register to participate call 777-2929.

The Missoula Public Library is holding a Colonial Yuletide crafts and cookie decorating activity for the entire family, on Saturday, December 22nd starting at 2 pm. This is part of the libraries “Alexander Hamilton’s” traveling exhibit. And tonight, the library is holding Socrates Café at 7 pm. Join Mitch Grady for an informal philosophical discussion on life’s big questions. Call 721-2665 for more information on the libraries activities.

The Christmas Eve Treasure State Luni-mar-ium will take place again this year in Helena on Christmas Eve from 6 to 10 pm. Everyone in the neighborhood will line their driveways and street with candles in paper bags. This event is located off Montana Avenue and take a right onto Beaverhead Drive. There will also be a Live Nativity scene on Odder road and you can also drop off a non perishable food item for the Helena Food Share program.

The Missoula Art Museum will hold Artini Thurday on the 20th starting at 5:30. Featuring the mixed voice choir, Dolce Canto starting at 6, until 8 pm. And local artist, Patricia Thornton will give an art talk at 7. Refreshments will be provided. This event is free and open to the public. They are located at 335 North Pattee.

The Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, the Gallagher Western Montana Charitable Foundation and the Jerry Metcalf Foundation, have awarded grants to the Missoula Cultural Council to fund First Night Missoula admission costs for hundreds of low-income families in Missoula County. Local charities will administer the distribution of the admission buttons. Button for First Night are currently on sale at 20 area outlets. The cost is $10 and $15 on December 31st. The VFW Superior Post 6238 is collecting cell phones for soldiers daily from 9 to 5 at four Missoula area fire stations, Kelly Insurance, and Cessna’s Hardware. The phones can be in any condition and will be recycled for phone cards for soliders in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each phone will provide a solider with 60 minutes of air time. This is an on-going project. Call 822-4935 for more details.

The City Life Community Center is in need of volunteers for various projects over the next few weeks including clean up, painting, and construction. The center, located at 1515 Fairview, by the fairgrounds behind the Montana Club, will be used to serve teenagers and their families and will house up to 9 other non-profit agencies. There are several Red Cross blood drives being held in various communities this week. Give the gift of life by dropping by one at one of the following places: in Missoula at the public library today from 3 to 6, or Lakeside Elementary school gym from 4 to 7. Tomorrow in Missoula at Hellgate from 9 to 1 or Polson High school from 10 to 3. On Thursday at the Missoula Red Cross from 3 to 6, in Pablo at Plum Creek Timber Company from noon to 5 or Libby at the VFW again from noon to 5. And on Friday in Thompson Falls at the Catholic Church or Kalispell at the Red Cross. 543-6695.
