Thistle & Shamrock for December 15, 2007 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM [Program Website]
Today's Highlight: "Longest Night" Pagan celebrations of the Winter Solstice are some of the oldest winter festivals in the world. The Norse people believed the sun was a wheel that changed the seasons and their word "houl" is thought to have given us "yule." For the ancient Celts, the midwinter sun was believed to stand still for twelve days and a log was lit to conquer the darkness. These and many other customs have been incorporated into Christian and secular winter holidays we’ll hear music that keeps their spirit alive today.
Viewing her program as an on-air community, Fiona Ritchie has created a gathering place for anyone who enjoys music from Celtic roots, and loves to accompany her across the bridges she builds between the traditional and the contemporary, between Celtic music and the world.
The object of international critical acclaim, Thistle comes to listeners from Perthshire in the heart of Scotland, where Ritchie weaves the textures of her musical world into a richly entertaining program. Step into the heart of an ancient tradition of reels, jigs, ballads, and laments. Then follow the pulse towards new music: an exuberant blend of irresistible rhythms, emotional voices, and fascinating instruments.
