Rowland has published two novels, both set in his home territory of southeast Montana. His first novel, In Open Spaces, made the San Francisco Chronicle Best Seller list. In Open Spaces was also named as one of The Best of the West 2002 by the Salt Lake City Tribune.

Rowland’s second book, The Watershed Years, is a sequel to In Open Spaces.
