Today's Highlight: The Travelers' Rest Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation will host a presentation by Milo McLeod, Lolo National Forest Archaeologist, on Thursday, October 4th at 7:00 pm. McLeod will discuss how the Lolo Trail became a National historic landmark, archaeological sites that were found, and management of the trail. The program will be held at the Lolo

On Thursday, October 4th from 6 – 9 pm, artist Linda Christensen invites the public to an art opening at Mako Gallery located at 334 Central Ave in Whitefish. Entitled, "Nature: Live! Standing at the Edge of the World," the exhibit is comprised of small watercolor life drawings, and the exhibit can be viewed through October 30th. The University of Montana Students for Peace and Justice and the Jeanette Rankin Peace Center in Missoula are celebrating the 5th anniversary of the Peace and Justice Film series this year. The next film scheduled in the series is entitled, "Biomimicry: Learning from Nature," which is an 89-minute, two-part series based on the book, Biomimicry: Innovation Inspired by Nature, by Janine Benyus. The film will be shown tomorrow, Thursday, October 4th at 5:30 and 7:30 pm in the University Center Theater on the UM campus. Call Sean at 721-4166 for more information.
Drivers who are age 50 and older are encouraged to update their driving skills and knowledge of rules of the road by attending a Driver Safety Course to be held at the St. Patrick Hospital, Conference Room A in Missoula, on October 4th and 5th at 6:30 pm. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation and the Swan Ecosystem Center will be hosting, "Voices of the Wilderness," an art show and silent auction on Friday, October 5th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm at the Hockaday Museum of Art, 302 2nd Ave East in Kalispell. This event will help the two nonprofits fund their trail and campsite work in the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, the Mission Mountain Wilderness, and the Swan Range. The Ravalli County Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence will host White Ribbon Week from October 4 – 12th in Hamilton. The White Ribbon campaign is a community–wide event to raise awareness about domestic violence in Ravalli County, and wearing a white ribbon signifies your commitment to ending violence against women. The Friends of the Flathead County Library will be holding their annual book sale this Friday through Sunday, October 5 – 7th at the Kalispell Center Mall in Kalispell. The booksale hours are Friday 10 – 8; Saturday: 10 – 6; and Sunday 11 – 4 pm. All proceeds will benefit the Flathead County Library and its branches. To benefit the women in Uganda who are fighting against their lot in life, the University Crafters of Missoula will be holding a “Beading For Life Extravaganza” this Friday, October 5th from 11 am to 2 pm in the University of Montana oval. They will be selling jewelry and paper beads the Ugandan women have made and will also be giving instructions on how to make necklaces, earrings, or bracelets. The Stevensville Art and Sculpture Society will be holding its second annual Stevensville Scarecrow Festival this Friday, October 5th. The public display will begin with the Stevensville Main Street Association’s monthly First Friday celebration and will remain on display throughout the following week. The Parent Expo, sponsored by the Dickenson Lifelong Learning Center in Missoula will be held on Saturday, October 13th, but registrations must be submitted by this Friday, October 5th. The conference will begin with guest speaker, Daniel McMannis, who will be discussing, “Parenting from the Heart,” a talk that will address the critical role the heart plays in children’s development, wellness, relationships, learning, and more. The Whitefish Theatre Co continues its 2007-2008 Film Series with the Oscar-winning Civil War epic, Gone With the Wind. The show will run this weekend, October 5 – 7th at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students. A plein air intensive art workshop will be conducted in the Bitterroot Valley near Florence and Stevensville this weekend, October 5th – 7th, with all media demonstrated: watercolor, oil, and mixed media. On Thursday evening, October 4th at 6:30 pm, participants will meet at Bob Phinney’s studio in Florence to get acquainted and set the location for the first day.
