Musicians' Spotlight for September 04, 2007
3:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Today's Highlight: "John Floridis hosts Martha Scanlan"
The haunting quality of former Missoulian Martha Scanlan's voice, unique perspective and poetic imagery of her songs helped to gain national acclaim for the innovative old-time string band, Reeltime Travelers whose first public appearance may have been at Missoula's Mammyth Bakery. In their six years of touring they played some of America's most prestigious venues and festivals from the Grand Old Opry to the Telluride Bluegrass Festival. They were also featured on the Great High Mountain Tour along with Alison Krauss, Ralph Stanley, and other artists from the “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” and “Cold Mountain” soundtracks.

The immersion into traditional American music and its expression in an ever-changing cultural landscape seems to be reflected in the songs she writes and the music she plays.

Shawn Colvin, Patty Larkin, and Leo Kottke have all stopped by the Montana Public Radio studios to play a little and talk with Brian Kopper and John Floridis. Performers talk about the inspiration behind their music and what it's like to both create and perform the music.

Montana artists like Zoe Wood and Wilson & McKee get equal time. Each week, hosts Brian Kopper and John Floridis, composers and performers themselves, give listeners a glimpse into the lives and art of the modern day troubadour.
