From the Top for August 09, 2007
7:35 PM - 8:30 PM

Today's Highlight: This week, "From the Top" comes from the Paramount Theatre in Austin, TX, and the annual convention of the Music Teachers performing a Liszt Transcendental Etude and a young flutist from Kentucky performing the music of Gerrge Jue and a 15 year-old cellist from California performing two movements of Ligetis Sonata for Solo Cello. Also, a major grudge match pitting students against teachers in From the Top's most down-and-dirty-ever round of Musical Jeopardy!

From the Top is an exciting and entertaining radio series that showcases the stories and musical performances of America's exceptional pre-collegiate classical musicians. The program is described by Symphony magazine as "not strictly a talk show, not strictly a musical performance show, but rather a blend of the two with a nod to the easy-going charm of 'A Prairie Home Companion.'"

Hosted by acclaimed concert pianist Christopher O'Riley, each one-hour program features performances by soloists or ensembles, ages 9-18, combined with lively interviews, unique pre-produced features and lighthearted musical games. Announcer Joanne Robinson and roving teenage reporter Hayley Goldbach are also featured in each week's show.

Responding to O'Riley's engaging and often whimsical manner, the young artists share their passion for and knowledge of the genre, and reveal much about their non-musical lives, from career goals and siblings to favorite breakfast foods and pets. Special guest artists often join the young musicians on stage, including Isaac Stern, Mark O'Connor, Joshua Bell, Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, Eileen Ivers, and Judy Collins.
