Today's Highlight: Wednesday, August 8th Two back-to-back events will give everyone the opportunity to explore The University of Montana’s Flathead Lake Biological Station to learn about the research they do there. From 2:00 – 5:00 pm this afternoon the biological station will hold an open house where the public can mingle with the staff for nature walks, a boat trip on a research vessel, or to browse research project displays. From 8:30 – noon tomorrow, August 9th, everyone can join researchers and students for a free symposium where the students will present their summer projects on Flathead floodplain and lake ecology. The Missoula Community Access Television, located at 500 North Higgins, will offer basic training to show you how to use MCAT for live TV Shows, remote camera shoots or computer video editing. To register for the workshop, call 542-6228 or show up at 5:30 pm TONIGHT with your ideas.
The Great Falls Public Library’s Summer Music Series will continue tomorrow night, August 9th at 7:00 pm in the Library Park, behind the library. Tomorrow’s concert features Bees in the Doorway & The Five Points with some seating provided, though you are encouraged to bring your own chairs or blankets. On Thursday, August 9th the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell invites all senior citizens to Senior Tour and Tea days. From 10 am to 4 pm, the Museum will offer free admission and light refreshments to all senior citizens. At 10:30 am, a special tour of the galleries will be conducted by the staff and docents. Tune up your driving skills with an AARP Driver Safety course that will be held at The Summit in Kalispell this Thursday, August 9th from 9:00 am to 1 pm. You may be eligible for a discount on your automobile insurance after you complete the course. The class is open to all who register by calling 751-4500.
Medicare recipients in the Great Falls area can enroll in free prescription assistance with the help from staff of the Montana Department of Public Health and AARP Montana. On Thursday, August 9th from 9 am to 4 pm assistance will be available at Benefis East – Meeting Room B, located at 1101 26th Street South in Great Falls. Call 457-4716 for further details.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Montana will conduct an Open House at the Blue Mountain Observatory this Friday evening, August 10th beginning at 10:30 pm. Everyone who is planning on attending, however, should call 243-5179 before heading up the mountain due to last-minute cancellations because of cloud cover. The NWS PEACE Program is looking for caring families to host high school students from Brazil, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and other countries for the 2007 academic year. The students are prescreened, speak English, have medical insurance, and their own spending money. Host families are not paid, but may be able to claim a $50.00 per month charitable contribution on their income tax. NCAT, the National Center for Appropriate Technology, located at 3040 Continental Drive in Butte, will host a SustainabilityFEST on Saturday, August 18, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The public will have the chance to learn about solar and wind energy systems, low-water landscaping, global warming, draft horse power, growing crops for energy and more.
