Today's Highlight: Wed January 17, 2007
The Public Libraries in Whitefish and Kalispell, as well as the Flathead Valley Community College will be screening and discussing award-winning human rights films this winter. All are welcome and the admission is free. The first film to begin this series is “Life and Debt” and will be shown on Thursday, January 18th at 7:00 p.m. at the Main Branch Library in Kalispell and then on Friday, January 20th at 2:00 p.m. in the Whitefish Branch Library. Brochures describing the films are available at all Flathead County Library Branches, at the Flathead Valley Community College, and online at www.flatheadcountylibrary.org. On Thursday evening, January 18th, the Missoula Art Museum will host artist Bently Spang whose work deals with issues surrounding his Northern Cheyenne identity. Spang will present a performative lecture and films of his performances will be on view. Call Steve at the

The Glacier Symphony in Kalispell is joining forces with the Alpine Theater Project to form a musical theater production of “The Sound of Music.” This production features a large orchestra and singing characters – without the staging. The concerts will be in the Flathead High School auditorium on Friday and Saturday, January 19th and 20th at 7:30 p.m. and a matinee will be performed at 3: 00 p.m. on Sunday. The Travelers’ Rest Preservation and Heritage Association of Lolo is sponsoring “Salish Language and Stories,” a winter storytelling event presented by Frances Vanderburg, a Salish Language and culture teacher at the Arlee Public Schools. This event will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 20th at the Travelers’ Rest State Park ¼ mile west of Lolo on U.S. Highway 12.

Beginning January 22nd, the University Of Montana College Of Technology will offer two online courses regarding alternative energy issues and the technology used to create, capture, and employ alternative energy sources. A special performance of the Montana Repertory Theater’s, “Lost in Yonkers,” will be performed on Saturday, January 20th at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by music, dancing, and light food. By attending this event, you’ll be supporting the endeavors of The Montana Rep in Missoula, around Montana, and nationally. Tickets are $40 per person; $75 per couple; and $99 for a group of three. The Great Falls Symphony will be presenting two performances by the Chinook Winds this Sunday, January 21st at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church and then again on Tuesday, January 23rd at 7:30 p.m. at the C.M. Russell Museum. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students

“The Blue Room,” the next performance of the Whitefish Theater Company’s staged reading series will be at 7:30 p.m. on January 21st and 22nd at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. On January 26th at 5:30 p.m., an auction benefiting the Traveler’s Rest Education Program will take place at the Doubletree Hotel in Missoula. Each year this program educates 35 hundred students from western Montana who take part in field trips at the Travelers’ Rest Historic site. Tickets are $35 and can be reserved by calling 273-4253 before January 22nd.

The Missoula International Friendship Program and the UM Foreign Student and Scholarship Service are looking for individuals or families who are interested in becoming a community friend with a UM International student. This is NOT a home stay; instead, you are asked to meet with an International student once a month to share their culture and friendship. Please call 243-2226 if you’re interested.

The Five Valley Chapter of the Sweet Adelines International will be performing their new show, “Tweet Harmony,” on Saturday, February 3rd.
