Tonight on Montana Evening Edition; Friday, December 14th
The Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee this week adopted a policy statement that basically recognizes hunting can serve as a management tool once the animal loses its federal protections. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Grizzly Bear Recovery Coordinator, Chris Servheen, is a member of that committee. In tonight's feature interview with Edward O'Brien, Servheen discusses what that policy statement does - and does not - mean. Somers is a small, tight-knit community on the north shore of Flathead Lake. The history of this former company town is still very much a part of its present. John O'Brien built himself a mansion when he opened up the lumber mill in Somers in the early 1900's. The mill is gone, so is the railroad tie factory, but the company homes and the O'Brien mansion remain. The mansion has fallen into disrepair with roof damage allowing water to seep into the house. The final figures confirm that Montana's 2012 U.S. Senate race between Democrat Jon Tester and Republican Denny Rehberg smashed campaign spending records, with at least 47 million dollars poured into the race - almost three times what was spent in the 2006 Tester/Burns race. Montana State University political science professor David Parker is writing a book on the 2012 race. In tonight's feature interview, Parker breaks down the campaign spending numbers with News Director Sally Mauk...
